1. What is CGPA vs SGPA?

In collegiate grading systems (such as VTU, AICTE, KTU, Anna University, and Mumbai University), student evaluation is structured across two primary metrics:

Single Term Metric

SGPA (Semester GPA)

SGPA measures academic performance within a single semester by evaluating the credit-weighted grade points earned in all courses completed during that specific term.

Program Metric

CGPA (Cumulative GPA)

CGPA measures overall academic standing across multiple semesters or the entire degree. It is the cumulative credit-weighted average of all semester SGPAs.

2. The Core Mathematical Formulas

CGPA is fundamentally a weighted mean where the weight of each semester (or course) is dictated by its credit allocation.

Formula A: Consolidating Semester SGPAs
CGPA = [ Σ (SGPA_i × Credits_i) ] / [ Σ Credits_i ]

Where SGPA_i is the SGPA of semester i and Credits_i is the total earned credits in semester i.

Formula B: Computing SGPA from Subject Credits
SGPA = [ Σ (Course_Credits_j × Grade_Point_j) ] / [ Σ Course_Credits_j ]

Where each subject's earned letter grade is converted to a numeric grade point (e.g. 10 for O/S, 9 for A+, 8 for A, 7 for B+, down to 0 for F).

3. Worked Numerical Example

Consider an engineering student who has completed 4 semesters with the following academic record:

SemesterSemester SGPASemester CreditsWeighted Credit Points (SGPA × Credits)
Semester 18.4020.0168.00
Semester 28.8020.0176.00
Semester 37.9024.0189.60
Semester 48.6024.0206.40
Total Cumulative88.0 Credits740.00 Points
Calculation Steps:
1. Sum of all Weighted Credit Points = 168.00 + 176.00 + 189.60 + 206.40 = 740.00
2. Sum of all Registered Credits = 20.0 + 20.0 + 24.0 + 24.0 = 88.00
3. Final CGPA = 740.00 / 88.00 = 8.409 → 8.41 CGPA
Notice: A simple unweighted average of the 4 SGPAs would yield (8.40 + 8.80 + 7.90 + 8.60) / 4 = 8.425. Because Semesters 3 and 4 have higher credit weight (24 vs 20), the exact weighted CGPA is correctly 8.41.

4. Handling Backlogs & Lateral Entry

Backlog / Arrear Course Retakes

When you fail a course (F grade), 0 grade points are added to the numerator, but the course's credits remain counted in the denominator. When you pass the subject in a subsequent remedial or supplementary examination, your earned grade point replaces the 0, restoring your CGPA.

Lateral Entry Students (Diploma to Degree)

Students entering through the Lateral Entry pathway enter directly in Semester 3. Semesters 1 and 2 are completely omitted from the cumulative calculation. Their graduating CGPA is computed solely over the 6 semesters completed (Semesters 3 through 8).

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers on CGPA calculation rules and academic weighting.

Cumulative CGPA is calculated using the credit-weighted formula: CGPA = Σ(SGPA_i × Credits_i) / Σ(Credits_i). Multiply each semester's SGPA by its credit count, add all the products, and divide by the total cumulative credits.

Only if every semester has the exact same credit weight. In engineering programs where some semesters carry 20 credits and others carry 24 or 25 credits, an unweighted average will introduce mathematical errors. Always use the credit-weighted sum.

Mandatory non-credit courses (such as Environmental Studies or Kannada in some schemes) require passing marks to fulfill graduation requirements, but carry 0 credits and do not affect your numerical SGPA or CGPA calculation.
