CALCULATION MODEL & REFERENCE

How the Modified Bavarian Formula Works

The modified Bavarian formula (modifizierte bayerische Formel) is the official mathematical standard adopted by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) and German universities, including TUM, to map foreign educational achievements onto the German 1.0–4.0 grading system.

German Grade = 1 + 3 × [(Nmax − Nd) / (Nmax − Nmin)]

Nmax = Maximum possible grade in the foreign grading system (e.g. 10.0 for Indian CGPA, 4.0 for US GPA, 100 for percentage).

Nmin = Minimum passing grade in the foreign grading system (e.g. 4.0 for Indian CGPA, 2.0 for US GPA, 40 for percentage).

Nd = The grade or CGPA obtained by the student in their original academic grading scale.

TUM Truncation Rule:

German universities such as the Technical University of Munich (TUM) truncate calculated grades after the first decimal place instead of rounding mathematically (e.g., a calculated 1.75 truncates to 1.7 rather than rounding to 1.8).

German Grading Scale Reference Band

German university grading follows a 5-tier classification structure where lower numerical values represent superior academic achievement:

TUM Formula FAQ

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) uses the Modified Bavarian Formula to convert your foreign grades to the German grading scale. The formula is: German Grade = 1 + 3 × ((Nmax - Nd) / (Nmax - Nmin)). The final grade is truncated after the first decimal place.

The Modified Bavarian Formula is the mathematical standard adopted by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) in Germany. It maps grades from an international grading system to the German 1.0 (best) to 4.0 (lowest passing) scale.

To convert your Indian or US GPA for TUM, you need your maximum possible grade (Nmax, e.g., 10.0 for India, 4.0 for US), the minimum passing grade (Nmin, e.g., 4.0 or 5.0 for India, 2.0 for US), and your obtained grade (Nd). Plug these into the Bavarian formula and truncate the result to one decimal place.
